Dear Cheer & Dance families ~

As we near the grand finale of 2020, we look towards the future but reflect upon the past. 2020 started out with so many unknowns, it continued with life as we knew it coming to a brutal halt; plans erased, goodbyes unsaid. It was as if we were frozen in time, many of our loved ones confused, lost and often times alone.

I am not sure if anyone was like me, but there would be times I would find myself crying, for no apparent reason. My Aunt Eileen who has been in quarantine since March in Vancouver, WA described them as “ambush tears”. These are tears that sneak up behind us and ambush us. For no apparent reason. We could be happy. We could be sad, but we are crying. We joked about how it would be cool to have a blanket Kleenex the size of a bedsheet to take care of those “ambush tears.”

As I am writing this letter, my ambush tears are ready to make an appearance. (It doesn’t take a whole lot these days to muster up enough emotion to flood the gates of Mighty Missouri.  )

But this morning, I know where my ambush tears are coming from. They're coming from years of service doing something that I love. They're coming from all of the memories and moments that I have experienced throughout 2020 with all of you. Words cannot express what it means to me and all of our coaches for the dedication and love that you have all shown to this program. And for that I thank you.

One of my favorite songs this time of year is Auld Lang Syne. There are many renditions; this one is my favorite. https://youtu.be/_GYCZGwUZuw.

Auld Lang Syne is a phrase that first appeared in a poem by Robert Burns in 1788, meaning, “old long since” or “the olden days”. Since that poem, the words, “Should old Acquaintance Be forgot,” has become one of the most common phrases describing New Years. The song goes on to honor those friendships that have survived the test of time encouraging those listening to lift their glasses in toast hopeful for the future, while reflecting on the past.

As we look towards 2021, we must give homage to where we have been. I have said many times I wish I could remember every little moment with each of you being able to pull those memories from my memory bank whenever needed. A memory never wanting to lose is most recently yelling across Mainstreet to some of our dancers, “Love you!” These brief glimpses in time, snapshots that make up the reels of our lives are what I think about when listening to Auld Lang Syne.

There are so many things that I am grateful for that happened in the year 2020. This what I choose to reflect on. And I l choose to look towards the future with optimism and hopefulness, ready to take on 2021 and those ambush tears! 

As you read through the newsletter my hope is you feel a sense of excitement for the future and a sense of family among our gym.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years!

“If I could sweep all of these moments to the edge of the table, scoop them up in my palm and drop them into a bottle . . . I would. And once inside, they would shimmer and glean, maintaining perfect clarity, always.” ~ Coach Traci Loecker

    Pumpkin Bars

    Cook:  30 mins

    Total:  45 mins

    Servings: 24

    2 c. all-purpose flour

    1 tsp. baking powder

    1/2 tsp. baking soda

    1 tsp. kosher salt

    2 tsp. cinnamon

    1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg

    1/4 tsp. ground ginger

    3 large eggs

    1 c. vegetable oil

3/4 c. lightly packed brown sugar

    1/2 c. granulated sugar

    1 (15-oz.) can pumpkin puree

1 (8-oz.) block cream cheese, softened

    1/2 c. (1 stick) butter, softened

    2 c. powdered sugar

    1 tsp. cinnamon

    1 tsp. pure vanilla extract

    Pinch kosher salt

    1. Preheat oven to 350° and spray a 9”-x-13” baking pan with cooking spray. In a large bowl whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.

    2. In a separate large bowl, whisk together eggs, oil, sugars, and pumpkin. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and stir until just combined. Pour batter into prepared baking sheet and bake until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean, about 30 to 35 minutes. Let cool completely.

    3. Meanwhile make frosting: In a large bowl using a hand mixer (or in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment), beat together cream cheese and butter until fluffy. Add powdered sugar and beat until combined then add cinnamon, vanilla, and salt.

    4. Frost bars with an offset spatula then cut into squares to serve.
